Razer BlackShark V2

E-Sports Gaming Headset mit THX Spatial Audio

Divide:

Beat the predecessor in all areas”. That could have been Razer’s motto when they hatched the BlackShark V2 headset. To stay in the visually appropriate language: Mission accomplished!

TriForce Titanium drivers increased to 50 millimeters, THX Spatial Audio, a good 30g weight loss, and then also cheaper – these are the quick key data compared to the old BlackShark.

Razer focused on three points in particular, which turned out to be fundamentally important when working with professional e-sportsmen: Positioning, clear communication, and noise cancellation.

Wearing comfort

The BlackShark V2 sits on the ears with soft memory foam. At the same time, a breathable fabric ensures that there is as little contact with the skin as possible. This prevents heat buildup during prolonged wear. Nevertheless, the ears are so well enclosed that little outside noise is allowed through. The headband is also softly padded, which means that the headset, which weighs about 260 g, is never distracting during use. The cable is sufficiently long at 1.8 m (without the USB part). A cloth bag is included for storage.

Positioning

Knowing where your opponent is is of course a big advantage in the game. The BlackShark V2 offers THX Spatial Audio for this. This turns stereo into 7.1 surround sound. But that’s not all: Razer offers THX profiles certified by game developers for various games for the first time. Among others, well-known e-sports games like “Apex Legends” and “CS:GO” make a start, but current top games like “Red Dead Redemption 2” and “Doom Eternal” are also on the list, which will grow over time. Two modes are available to choose from, THX Environmental Mode and Competitive Mode. The former lets you completely immerse yourself in the game world and experience it as it was conceived by the manufacturer. Mode two comes into play when it comes to competitive advantages, i.e. sound sources have to be perceived quickly and clearly in their position. Of course, all other games for which there is no special profile also benefit from this technology. Installed games are recognized by the required Synapse software. Here, you can individually set which game should use THX Spatial Audio.

In use

The software isn’t necessary for the first sound check. The wired headset can be connected to various devices via a 3.5 mm jack and already cuts a more than respectable figure in this mode. Music is played back clearly and without any flaws. Overall, the headset leaves a very balanced sound and does without bass accentuations that are often heard in the gaming sector. So, if you’re not put off by the cable, you’ll definitely get a headset that meets various requirements with the BlackShark V2. Console gamers will also have a headset at hand that will thrill them with its sound, without ever having taken a look at the software. Razer has thus succeeded in adjusting the default settings.

A very nice feature of the BlackShark V2 is the easily accessible volume control on the left earpiece. Thus, quick volume adjustments are possible without having to disappear into menus.

If you decide to use all the options, the Razer software is a must. The headset is connected to the PC via the included USB sound card. In Synapse, the Razer software for all in-house devices, the individualization and upgrading starts. Not only can THX Spatial Audio be enabled, but the sound can also be adjusted via bass boost, normalization and 10-band EQ. With a few small adjustments, everyone can find a sound that suits them, and the BlackShark V2 never loses the clarity it received from the factory. What comes out of the 50 mm drivers delights with clear highs and rich basses, no matter how much you play around in the software. You can literally hear how Razer tried to create the headset for competition, and succeeded. THX Spatial Audio is, of course, one of the highlights of the headset. Activated, you are transported into a room, and the sound sources are now perceived much more accurately from the different directions. The sound quality does not suffer when THX Spatial Audio is activated. An authentic reverberation is perceptible, which is excellent for the realism in the game.

Even games that are not or not yet on the THX list literally suck you into the digital world, which seems bigger and more real thanks to THX Spatial Audio.

Clear communication

Items two and three on the Razer list can be partially brushed off together. First, the included microphone has to be attached to the headset for clear communication. With a cardioid pickup pattern, this picks up frequencies from 100 Hz to 10 kHz coming from one direction, and a foam pop shield keeps the other end of the line happy. In fact, voice recordings are incredibly clear, as if this was the developers’ goal and bass was missing. Razer does not call it “HyperClear Cardioid Mic” for nothing. However, since it is about the transmission of speech, this is definitely preferable, because other headsets tend to sound much too muffled in comparison. If this bothers you, you can relax, because this is again only the well-done default setting. Several settings are available for the microphone in Synapse. If you miss bass in your voice, you can play at the lower end of the 10 bands of the equalizer or look through the various profiles that Razer has left behind. Fortunately, the microphone never loses its clarity in the process, but it definitely gains substance for the respective use.

Instead of Noise Gate, there is a Voice Gate here, which is actually a Noise Gate. Regardless of the term, when activated, it sets what the threshold for the microphone should be. With a low threshold, quiet background noise is ignored by the microphone. A small mute button on the left earpiece is also quickly clicked during gaming and provides one-sided silence in the chat.
