JVC HA-KD9BT-A Tinyphones Wireless

Handy Bluetooth on-ears for kids with volume limiter

Divide:

JVC have lightweight, wireless children’s headphones with an ear-safe volume limit in the Tinyphones Wireless range, which have a 3-button remote with integrated microphone for controlling Android and iOS devices

Made of plastic, the on-ears give a robust impression due to their stretchy and compliant earpiece construction. At the same time, there is enough stability so that a good hold is given and although there is no earpiece padding, the fit is comfortable even for adults. In addition to the good adaptability and soft ear padding, this is also due to the flexible, seven-stage size adjustment. This allows the headphones to “grow” with the user and covers a wide age range.

On the energy side, the Tinyphones Wireless have a runtime of up to twelve hours, whereby the battery status can be seen on a display next to the Bluetooth symbol in combination with iOS devices. When the battery is empty, a full charge via the included USB cable takes between two and three hours. However, an alternative wired use is not possible.

Device control

The on-ears support Bluetooth version 4.2 and offered stable ranges of up to ten meters in the practical test with various Android and iOS systems, which is a respectable result and offers a lot of freedom of movement when gaming. Pairing is easy to implement and is done by holding down the central remote button on the right headphone shell for a long time, which turns the system on and puts it directly into pairing mode.

When the wireless connection is established, the button can then be pressed to start and stop playback as well as answer and end phone calls. You can also skip forward to the next track with a double click and back with a triple click, which also works flawlessly. On the other hand, separate plus and minus buttons are available for adjusting the volume, which can be perceived haptically, which simplifies orientation during use. The speech intelligibility during calls is also okay, although the presentation is quite quiet on both sides.

Sound

The Tinyphones Wireless have a bass-emphasized tuning, but their presence is not in the low frequencies, but in the upper bass range. Nevertheless, the bass foundation seems stately and sometimes even overloaded. In contrast, the trebles seem underrepresented, which results in a rather muffled sound character overall. However, the clear, balanced mids clearly enhance the sound and ultimately enable a wide range of applications. Spoken content gets an earthy-warm undertone and shrill sounds seem muffled. At the same time, contemporary pop music benefits from a dynamic kick and presence in the basses.

Volume limit

To protect children’s hearing from damage caused by listening at too high a volume, the Tinyphones Wireless have a volume limiter. This means that the maximum output level of the headphones is limited to 85dB, which still corresponds to a high volume, so that listening in louder environments is also possible. In quiet atmospheres and with small children, attention should therefore still be paid to the volume setting. Since the limitation is done via an internal circuit, it is always active and cannot be cancelled from the outside.

FAQ

JVC’s Tinyphones Wireless feature great adaptability, appear robust, easy to clean and sit comfortably. The high Bluetooth range offers children a lot of freedom of movement, while the volume limit protects their hearing. From a sound perspective, a more balanced tuning would be desirable, even though the wireless on-ears are quite universal despite their bass-heavy nature. However, the price-performance ratio of the Bluetooth headphones for children is decidedly good.
